Charles sadly passed on 13th March 2020, at the start of the COVID lockdown so the service was at that time limited to close family. It was finally time to say farewell to a great advocate for life saving both here in the state where he was president from 1987 through to 2000, and nationally working with SLSA.

The service was attended by 100 guests comprising family, friends and colleagues from the lifesaving world. Charles’s partner Robyn read an emotional poem to open the service followed by reminiscences from his long-time friends Neil Roberts and Tony Fraser, SLSA President Graham Ford, LSV Past President Michael Martin and LSV CEO Nigel Taylor.

Portsea, a club close to Charles’s heart managed to be mentioned half a dozen times including a picture of Charles wearing a Swim Classic T-shirt, a shot of Tim Hart being awarded the Wishart Medal in 1988 by Charles and the epic picture of an IRB trying to escape a 30ft Portsea wave from a promotional photo shoot arranged by Charles. The gathering was both emotional and uplifting as we remember the gentle giant and the escapades from his long life.
